Director of Development

China Institute in America seeks a dynamic and experienced Director of Development to lead the implementation of a successful fundraising program.

The ideal candidate will be a highly accomplished professional with a distinguished and proven track record of achieving significant major gift charitable support, and experience in creating and implementing a capital campaign strategy. The Director of Development reports directly to the President, and is responsible for the overall strategy and management of the Institute’s fundraising efforts. This includes identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations and government organizations; management of grant proposals; oversight of annual fundraising events; and implementation of annual giving appeal. S/he will work closely with the President, Board and staff to align the Institute’s fundraising efforts with the strategic directions and needs of the organization and to implement the Capital Campaign.

The ideal candidate will have strong management, writing and interpersonal skills, and the vision to motivate and lead the six member development department in a collegial environment. The Director should have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years of fundraising experience, with the ability to show progressive achievements in personal solicitation, effective board training, and the ability to create a high performing and sustainable development program.

Strong proficiency with Raiser’s Edge and Microsoft programs required. Experience with an international non-profit or for-profit organization, or with an academic/research/arts institution, is advantageous.

Teach China Program Coordinator

China Institute’s premier professional development program for K-12 educators, Teach China, is seeking a highly qualified, dynamic individual to fill the position of Program Coordinator. The Program Coordinator is responsible for outreach, coordinating the production of curriculum and web materials, as well as program administration. Chinese language abilities and experience in Chinese societies is a must, and a background in education highly desirable. Candidates must be prepared to travel to China and other locations, as well as be available to attend key educational conferences. The Program Coordinator reports directly to the Associate Director of Teach China.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure program representation at key local-, state-, and federal-level education conferences;
  • Coordinate with Teach China program participants to present workshops at conferences;
  • Be an enthusiastic, friendly, and informative representative to promote the program and China Institute at various conferences;
  • Update China Institute physical and electronic outreach materials with correct information regarding Teach China programs;
  • Coordinate and distribute promotional materials for two annual Teach China mass mailings;
  • Coordinate any and all advertising for the Teach China program and interact with relevant CI staff to ensure consistency in advertising look and feel;
  • Draft promotional materials associated with courses, workshops, and summer institutes and ensure all material is updated on the web and in institutional literature (i.e., calendar of events);
  • Oversee registration and other administrative duties for Teach China workshops;
  • Facilitate discussion during courses, workshops and pedagogy sessions as necessary;
  • Collaboratively work with Teach China and other China Institute staff to create multi-media materials related to the gallery’s exhibitions that will furnish information and activities for (1) classes visiting China Institute, and (2) a wider educational constituency in cyberspace;
  • Contribute to planning and preparing for study tours, including logistical planning and conducting participant interviews;
  • Actively participate in extended study tours of up to a month each year throughout China and coordinate post-study tour curriculum workshops;
  • Along with other Teach China staff, coordinate curriculum contributions from educators participating in classes, study tours, and other projects;

Qualifications include:

  • Fluency in English and strong facility in Mandarin Chinese;
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to adhere to deadlines;
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently;
  • Familiarity with web-based technologies and SmartBoard applications;
  • Experience in educational field and curriculum design a strong plus.

Project Manager

China Institute, a New York-based, innovative educational non-profit organization established to advance understanding of China in the US, seeks a dynamic and experienced Project Manager. China Institute is embarking on a new program to develop a wide range of inter-disciplinary multi-media, educational materials and programs based on the exquisitely illustrated children’s book series: We All Live in the Forbidden City.

The Project Manager will research and design a plan to translate, publish and disseminate the book series, as well as evaluate the suitability of a public exhibition of the book series for an American audience. The Project Manager will serve as China Institute’s liaison with project partners including: publishing companies, translators, television networks, schools, and museums.

Responsibilities include:

  • Outreach to US children’s publishing companies as prospective partners;
  • Evaluate the possibility of self-publishing the book series;
  • Determine the most appropriate arrangement to ensure that the book series will be exposed to the greatest number of American children, families, and educators;
  • Identify qualified candidates to translate We All Live in the Forbidden City into English for young readers;
  • Evaluate the suitability of the We All Live in the Forbidden City exhibition for an American audience;
  • Outreach to museums as potential hosts of a companion exhibition and television networks as potential broadcasters of an animated TV series based on the translated We All Live in the Forbidden City;
  • Develop and refine the project timeline and key phases;
  • Coordinate with existing programs at China Institute including education, exhibitions, and publications;
  • Identify adjunct staff and appropriate infrastructure needed to realize all project components (publication, education, exhibition); and
  • Determined overall project budget range.

Qualifications include:

  • Expertise in the American publishing industry;
  • Fluency in both English and Mandarin, (Cantonese is highly desirable as a plus);
  • Excellent writing and project management and budget skills;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to adhere to deadlines;
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently;
  • Ability and willingness to travel to China;
  • Experience, creativity and enthusiasm to research and design a unique educational project; and
  • Experience in curriculum design and/or teacher professional development, a plus.

Assistant Director-Summer Study in China (SSC) 2012

Candidates must be proficient in Mandarin, highly motivated, organized and interested in being part of a culturally diverse team. They must also be innovative, flexible and capable of devoting significant time and energy to assisting in the development of a range of varied curriculum for high school students.

In addition to the above requirements the Assistant Director must also possess excellent speaking and interpersonal skills in both English and Mandarin, the ability to interface with the public in a professional manner, and a readiness to live in either Beijing or Shanghai for the four to five week duration of the Summer Study Program; a graduate degree (specifically History, Political Science, International Relations or Chinese), record of pedagogical excellence and experience living and traveling in China are highly desirable.

The Assistant Director will report directly to the Resident Director of his/her program and will work closely with program support staff.

This is a contract position. Pre-program and post-program work is required, but can be completed off-site.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Resident Director to develop curriculum, extra-curricular activities and community outreach opportunities for students;
  • Coordinate with other programs at China Institute, especially our other SSC program, to ensure consistency in design, management and impact;
  • Team teach a course with Resident Director concerning China’s modern history (Shanghai only)
  • Assist the Resident Director – when called upon – by communicating with partner organizations and/or host families, managing the program team in China, and coordinating with other programs at China Institute;
  • Manage program interns;
  • Accompany students during all phases of travel, both international and domestic;
  • Escort students on after-class trips in and around Shanghai or Beijing;
  • Attend pre-program orientation in New York City for students and guardians;
  • Aid with any post-program follow-up activities.

Part-Time Grants Accountant

China Institute in America seeks a part-time Grants Accountant for its active Finance Department to assist with pre-award grant budgeting, day-to-day accounting of grant revenue and expenses, and provide close-out financial reporting to grantors in addition to handling special projects.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with project and program managers to develop budgets for new grant submissions and grant renewals
  • Maintain allocation records for multi-grant funded projects and programs
  • Reconcile grant expenditures with general ledger activity on a monthly basis to ensure proper allocation
  • Provide grant financial information/statistics for Development Department as needed
  • Manage financial responsibilities related to grant close-out

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation of miscellaneous reports and surveys for senior management, annual budget and year-end audit work papers
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Primary Requirements:
Qualified candidate must have a Bachelors degree in accounting, finance or related field. In addition, have knowledge of grant regulations and operation policies and experience in grant budget preparation. Ideal individual would be pro-active and solution oriented, enthusiastic, and possess strong organizational, computer and interpersonal skills. A strong knowledge of and facility with Financial Edge is preferred.

This is a part-time position. Two days a week / 14 hours total, excluding lunch. Salary up to $20 per hour based on experience.

Mandarin Adult Language Program Teachers

China Institute in America, a non-profit, non-partisan, educational, and bi-cultural organization based in NYC, is seeking experienced Mandarin teachers within the tri-state region for its Adult Language Program. Positions currently available include teachers for our group classes, and tutors for our private and corporate tutoring programs.

Successful candidates should be native speakers of Chinese who speak standard Mandarin with clear diction and who have a good command of spoken English. They should be comfortable with dealing with students from diverse backgrounds within the business world and private sector; be presentable in appearance and disposition; punctual; enthusiastic in their instruction and, for private tutoring, must be able to choose materials suited for each students’ needs, level, and abilities. Minimum educational requirement: B.A. degree.

Group classes are held onsite at China Institute. All classes use pinyin and simplified characters. Most tutoring assignments are offsite and held at our students’ office or home with some assignments taking place onsite at China Institute. Competitive hourly wage available. Mandarin Children’s Program Teachers

China Institute in America, a non-profit, non-partisan, educational, and bi-cultural organization based in NYC, is seeking experienced children’s Mandarin teachers. Grouped by ages three and up, children learn a dynamic mix of Chinese language and culture through a whole language approach in active classroom environments. Successful candidates should be native speakers of Chinese who have teaching experience using simplified characters and who have a very good command of spoken English. They should be vivacious in the classroom and eager to nurture children’s learning and growth. They must feel comfortable creating their own curricula and finding materials to suit classroom needs, levels, and abilities. Teaching assignments may entail classroom teaching or private tutoring and may be onsite, offsite in other schools, or in students’ homes. Classes are taught using simplified characters. Competitive hourly wage.
