2012 China Institute-STARTALK Summer Language Academy

China Institute, through a generous grant from StarTalk, a project of the National Strategic Language Initiative, will offer scholarships worth $3,000 each to 25 New York metro-area high school students to attend a six-week Chinese language summer academy in New York City.
Equivalent to one semester of high school Mandarin Chinese, the 2012 China Institute-StarTalk Summer Language Academy offers intensive language instruction with an emphasis on practical communication skills integrated with cultural activities, hands-on studio art classes, and field trips to area sites of cultural and historical significance. The program offers two levels of Mandarin Chinese classes for students ranging from no experience to five years of Mandarin language learning. This non-residential Academy will be held from July 9 to August 17, 2011, Mondays through Fridays from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM in New York City. Needs-based stipends to cover daily expenses for transportation and lunch will be available to select students.
Application and Admission
Applicants are expected to pay a non-refundable application fee. The general application deadline is May 1, 2012. A general admission decision will be made in late May. Needs-based stipends notifications will be issued in June.
Early Decision
All application materials must be received by Monday, April 2, 2012 in order for a student to be considered for Early Decision. Students applying as Early Decision candidates will receive their admission decision by May 1, 2012.
