in conjunction with the exhibition

Theater, Life, and the Afterlife: Tomb Décor of the Jin Dynasty from Shanxi

February 9 – June 17, 2012

China Institute Gallery’s art education program, Discover China Through Art (DCTA), introduces participants to the celebration of the Chinese New Year Festival and to our exhibition Theater, Life, and the Afterlife: Tomb Décor of the Jin Dynasty from Shanxi. The three-part program generally features a docent-led gallery tour, a video presentation, and a hands-on art workshop. This program will help participants understand the beautiful intricate brick carvings from an excavated tomb in Shanxi Province, revealing a passion for theater and opera in this region during the Jin dynasty (1115 – 1234). The following workshops will be offered:

Workshop I: February 13 – March 31, 2012
Calligraphy Workshop
Participants will learn basic calligraphy brushstrokes to make their own New Year decoration on festive red paper.

Workshop II: April 1 – June 15, 2012
Figure Patterns Making Workshop
Participants will create beautiful 2-D artworks utilizing the figure patterns from brick carvings that they have seen in the exhibition to learn the traditional Chinese stories behind the decoration and its significance.
